A Personal Journey…
By: Melissa Knauff
We didn’t get as much exploring done as we had hoped…, but on the upside, the new equipment is amazing, and the weather is starting to clear. Today, is March 20, 2026, so as you can see, we didn’t meet the deadline for the new footage…but there will be some posted by April 1st…Thanks again for your patience.

OUR JOURNEY BEGINS…WITH A GLIMPSE INTO THE PAST…

My name is Melissa, a 59-year-old woman with a deep connection to Land Between the Lakes National Park, my cherished sanctuary. Decades ago, when it was still a state park, and I was a young woman, I hiked, swam, and camped across its vast beauty, driven by a dream to explore every acre—a goal I nearly achieved. In that time, this place became my lifeline, my first real home, healing me in ways that changed me forever. I met my husband not ten miles from this very spot (almost twenty years ago now) After several years of living in distant corners of the country, me and my husband returned to this beloved state where seven years ago we bought a tiny river cabin, originally moved from the LBL property in the 1970s, our home now—just a three-minute drive from this place that holds my heart. I am here once again, aspiring to heal once more through a reconnection to these woods and waters, putting one foot in front of the other, in Mother Nature’s gentle embrace, and surrounded by my soul’s sanctuary, hoping to weave its timeless magic back into the fabric of my being.

READERS BE WARNED:
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A POLISHED, EXPERIENCED, AND SCRIPTED VLOGGER …THIS AIN’T THAT.
This won’t be your typical, neatly packaged cookie-cutter “getting healthy” blog post. This is me, raw and real, letting every human flaw wave like a flag. This is me, all my messy bits laid bare, sharing a journey that’s part health quest, part soul revival. Once I’ve built some strength by walking my uphill trek every day, mastered my camera (no more blurry disasters), and the snakes have gone to bed for the season, I’ll lead you off the trail into LBL’s secret wonders—Off-road and off-script, sharing its untamed beauty with you all and, hopefully, rediscovering mine. I’m beyond excited to take you with me, deep into the woods where this place’s true magic waits to reveal itself to all who dare to enter…. Come along—it’s beautiful here, and my promise to you is that this adventure will be gloriously messy and real!

The Creek That Calls and the Hill That Mocks
Walking down the hill pictured below would be a breeze the return to the truck at the top might not be a great idea at this early stage of my journey… ;)

I’m standing on a road that curves down to one of the chilliest, most stunning creeks in Land Between the Lakes—my heart’s home, LBL. The park’s entrance sign stands proudly behind me, practically daring me to start this adventure. My original plan? Stroll down to that sparkling creek and back. Easy, right? Except I’m a nearly 60-year-old woman and 215 pounds of gloriously flawed human who’s spent the last five years smoking like a rusty locomotive and drinking enough vodka to launch a ferry to Neverland. After COVID hit the world stage, my husband and I had several instances where health emergencies and near-fatal accidents helped to create the embarrassed shut-in that I have become.
I realize how self-defeating that last statement sounds, but I leave it in because it is true…real and raw…But on the upside, that “shut-in” created this website, where my dream of a Plant repository is finally coming to life after 20 years of dreaming about it.
The thought of hiking back up this hill? Yeah, that’s not a wellness plan—that’s a one-way ticket to Stroke City. (We have to laugh at our own absurdities, don’t we?) So…the new plan? We will be driving to the creek…(a beautiful place to start)…walking up hill, probably very short distances to the second curve sign (approximately .5 of a mile) and back downhill to the truck parked there by the creek. A much more realistic and achievable goal…
Day One…
A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO START

Day Two Walking Uphill … LBL
I decided to leave all the audio huffing, puffing, coughing, and obvious inexperience in the videos for this series to record my journey real raw and unedited…As a heartfelt hope and open invitation to get outside and do something that scares you, don’t be afraid to look foolish, act childish, and be vulnerable (at our age, you must embrace the inner child…right?)…just do it. Trust me, if I can, ANYONE can. These first few videos will be me on a steep learning curve, experimenting with different cameras and filming techniques … The videos will get better each time I promise ;) I left it like this to record the real journey…not an edited one.
Day Three Walking Up A Different Hill
This journey started a few months back. After about a week of filming at Land Between the Lakes National Park, I paused the launch for this series so that I might become more organized and wait out the end-of-season camping crowd, along with the hunters who were everywhere…
Please consider this our pre-launch teaser. ;)
